I started this new blog with the hopes of sharing aspects of my life with the world. Doing this brings up an interesting question. Is sharing on social media bragging? I mean let’s face it, everywhere you look people are sharing items they have purchased, vacations they have been on or things they have accomplished. So the question is if they do that are they bragging?
I guess the first thing to do would be to determine what bragging is. According to Webster’s dictionary it defines brag as noun as;
Brag as a verb – bragged; bragging
intransitive verb: to talk boastfully // always bragging about his success
transitive verb: to assert boastfully // bragged that she was the faster runner on her team
I think it’s human nature to share things we are interested in as well as things we have been able to accomplish. I think how you go about doing that based on the definition above determines if one is sharing versus bragging or boasting.
Seeing others have success and overcoming their struggles is very motivational to me. I hope as I share things about my life that I struggle with or accomplish that it will encourage others to share as well.
Over the last few months as we have all had to stay home its led to people feeling isolated and disconnected. I think having ways to connect with people online is now more important than ever.
So I can only speak for myself but I do not feel sharing on social media means people are bragging. Yes some people do brag but the act of sharing things about your life does not automatically mean you are bragging.
So now you know my thoughts, but I am curious what you think? Is sharing on social media bragging? Let me know in the comments below.
