Online Gaming

Online gaming is a great way to socialize and spend time with friends, especially when you can’t get together during a pandemic. Having the ability to play with friends and work together as a team to conquer virtual worlds is a great way to spend one’s time.

It was because of my interest in gaming that I wanted to learn more about computers. This ultimately lead to me going back to school to get a diploma in Computer Science and started my career in Information Technology. Something I am still doing and enjoying 20 years later.

I am a big fan of Massively Multiplayer Online Games or MMO’s for short. I actually started playing MMO’s back in 1999 when I discovered this new game called EverQuest. In fact this is where my online persona came from as I played a barbarian warrior named Vanguard.

EverQuest was the most social game I ever played. I did not know anyone else that played the game. Everyone I met and got to know was through playing the game. I ended up joining a guild named Stormriders and played EverQuest for many, many years. In fact you can still play the game over 20 years later.

Back then the only way you could communicate with other players was through typing in the games chat window. Today there are many different kinds of online games that players can use voice communication with via third party programs like Discord. This is a much better way to communicate and yet meeting new people online does not happen very often. Most people just play with people they know in real life now.

Over the years I have played many different MMO’s including World of Warcraft which is probably the most know one today. I currently am not playing any MMO’s as I feel they have lost what made them great. I am hopeful that someone will make a new MMO that I will want to play. I have my eye on Pantheon – Rise of the Fallen which looks to try and capture that social aspect again.

In addition to MMO’s a very popular type of online game to play are First Person Shooters or FPS for short. There are a variety of games out there that pit player versus player. Currently my game of choice is Call of Duty Modern Warfare which I play with my son and a few friends. We played through Season 3 and are currently on Season 4.

So on rainy days, cold winters or during a pandemic, playing online with friends is a good way to have some fun and pass the time. Do you play online games? If you do what games do you enjoy and why? Maybe we can get together and play sometime!
